Mint Mobile is a low-cost cell phone service provider that uses T-Mobile's network. I conducted a series of speed tests using an Apple iPhone 12 to see the 5G coverage in Miami Beach, Florida. In this video, I'll share those Mint Mobile 5G speed test results and give you a tour of my city. To check Mint Mobile's 5G coverage where you live, enter your address on Mint's website. my first test of 5g with mint mobile
0:03
using the iphone 12. check out these
0:05
download speeds up to 300 megabits per
0:08
second
0:09
we're gonna get into it in today's video
0:12
hey it is michael welcome to the channel
0:13
and i've got a good one for you today if
0:15
you're not familiar
0:16
mint mobile is a low-cost cell phone
0:19
service provider
0:20
that uses t-mobile's network and you may
0:22
have seen the commercials for it it is
0:24
owned
0:25
by actor ryan reynolds this is my third
0:28
time
0:28
testing mint mobile over the past few
0:30
years the first two times were with the
0:32
4g
0:33
lte network and now this is my first
0:36
time trying out
0:37
5g now my primary line is still with
0:39
visible i'll link to my
0:41
review of that in the description below
0:43
but i do really like mint mobile for
0:45
people who want t-mobile's network
0:47
for a lower price the rates with mint
0:50
mobile are good
0:51
activation is really easy and the
0:53
coverage is dependable
0:54
if t-mobile's towers are strong where
0:57
you live but today's video is going to
0:59
focus solely on
1:00
data speeds those 5g speeds with mint
1:03
mobile
1:04
i walked around miami beach florida to
1:06
run speed tests
1:07
in various outdoor locations where 5g is
1:10
available
1:10
places like lincoln road the beach
1:14
and even ocean drive so let's get to my
1:17
results
1:17
starting from right outside the t-mobile
1:20
store on lincoln road
1:21
now while i run these tests you'll see
1:23
the download speed and the upload speed
1:26
the ping or latency will also be shown
1:29
on the screen
1:30
i'll focus mostly on the download speeds
1:32
because that affects most of the
1:33
activities that we do on our phones
1:35
like streaming video and music surfing
1:37
the web and using our apps
1:39
and look at this up to 300 megabits per
1:42
second with 5g access on our first test
1:45
that is about 10 times the download
1:47
speeds i used to get with the mint
1:49
mobile on the 4g
1:50
lte network next is the upload speed
1:54
nearly 70 megabits per second very nice
1:57
now remember this result because i'm
1:59
going to circle back to this location
2:00
for another test
2:02
later on in our video right now let's
2:05
keep it moving and we'll go from lincoln
2:07
road i'm going to take you down to the
2:09
beach just a short walk it's a cloudy
2:10
day
2:11
but we had a cold front move in and
2:13
dropped it to 80 degrees here in miami
2:15
beach yeah
2:16
80 degrees is pretty cool for us i
2:18
conducted this test near the ritz
2:20
carlton
2:21
so that is the address i plugged in on
2:23
mint mobile's website
2:24
to confirm 5g coverage you will also see
2:28
5g in the upper right corner of my
2:30
iphone 12 screen
2:32
much lower than at the t-mobile store
2:34
but still an impressive
2:36
80 megabits per second now that would be
2:38
great if you wanted to download a movie
2:40
or a tv show
2:41
to stream while you're sitting on the
2:43
beach moving to the upload speed
2:45
that checks in close to 60 megabits per
2:48
second
2:48
also slower than the previous test but
2:50
still very good and if you had to send
2:52
any big files over email with your phone
2:55
you'll appreciate and upload speed like
2:58
that
2:58
i hate to leave the beach but next we
3:01
will head off the beach
3:02
not too far though to ocean drive this
3:05
area
3:06
is also much quieter right now because
3:07
of the pandemic i glanced
3:09
down at my phone to confirm 5g access
3:11
while i was walking
3:13
and then i moved to a spot under a tree
3:16
right across from
3:17
a bar and restaurant after i pressed go
3:20
here's a look at what happened you see
3:23
the download speed
3:24
jumps to more than 100 megabits per
3:26
second
3:27
now this is faster than the beach test
3:29
just a little bit of a walk away
3:31
but slower than the one at the t-mobile
3:34
store
3:35
the upload speed clocks in just below 50
3:37
megabits per second so that
3:39
is the slowest performance of the three
3:41
tests that we have conducted so far
3:44
but still not bad now before i went home
3:48
i had to walk back to lincoln road and
3:50
the t-mobile store for one
3:52
last test i'm in a slightly different
3:55
spot
3:55
but i wanted to see if i could get
3:57
another speed test of 300 megabits per
4:00
second download speed
4:01
using mint mobile this time as you can
4:04
see
4:04
it was about half that closer to 150
4:08
megabits per second download speed
4:10
the funny thing is just a couple blocks
4:12
away from the t-mobile store
4:13
there's an apple store and when i was
4:15
there i didn't even have 5g access the
4:18
place where i bought the 5g compatible
4:20
iphone 12
4:21
it was only 4g lte now as i'm sure you
4:24
know
4:25
5g isn't available everywhere as of the
4:27
recording of this video
4:29
and even in places where it is it may
4:31
not be available both
4:32
indoors and outdoors you may only get 5g
4:35
outside
4:36
you noticed i did all my tests outside
4:38
in fact where i live and in many of the
4:40
residential parts
4:42
of miami beach only 4g lte
4:45
is available so why don't i run a speed
4:47
test from where i live right now
4:49
and we'll see how it goes i've got my
4:50
phone right here running the test
4:52
i'll get back to that in just a second
4:54
as i keep talking here as i was walking
4:56
around town i kept glancing down at my
4:58
phone
4:59
and would see it switch from lte to 5g
5:02
and then back from 5g to lte
5:04
sometimes i would actually be looking at
5:06
my phone at the very moment when it made
5:08
that switch
5:09
if you want to see if 5g access is
5:11
available where you live
5:13
using mint mobile you can go to their
5:15
website and search for the coverage map
5:16
you'll be able to enter your exact
5:18
address and see whether it'll work
5:20
indoors outdoors or both and now the
5:23
results of the speed test that i just
5:25
did from right here
5:26
you may be able to see it on my phone
5:28
about six megabits per second and the
5:30
funny thing is
5:30
my phone says in the upper right corner
5:32
that there is 5g
5:34
but on mint mobile's website it says
5:36
where i live there's only 4g lte
5:39
again some 5g is only outdoors and some
5:42
indoors
5:43
clearly where i am now we're still on 4g
5:45
lte
5:46
and this is on the low end for 4g lte
5:49
but at 5 to 6 megabits per second i can
5:51
usually still watch a video
5:53
or stream music without buffering but i
5:55
would really like to see speeds a little
5:57
bit better than that
5:58
even at 4g lte so while we're here why
6:01
don't i just show you i pulled up a
6:03
video
6:04
on my blog this is a youtube video and
6:07
you are thinking about signing up
6:08
it's playing the video just fine and
6:10
that is with the
6:12
around six megabits per second so even
6:14
with that low
6:16
download speed of around six megabits
6:18
per second some of the basic tasks that
6:19
i use my phone for like streaming video
6:22
music surfing the web using my apps
6:24
still works pretty well
6:26
and obviously if there is no 5g
6:28
available where you live
6:29
there is no reason to rush into buying a
6:31
5g compatible device
6:33
like the iphone 12 or moving to a
6:36
low-cost cell phone service provider
6:37
that has
6:38
5g access like mint mobile and i'll also
6:41
throw in this
6:42
even if 5g access is available where you
6:44
live if you're happy with your current
6:46
data speeds on 4g lte
6:48
well that's another reason why you may
6:50
not need to be among the first to try
6:51
out 5g
6:52
the longer you stay with your current
6:54
device you will be able to save money
6:56
because
6:57
you need to have a 5g compatible phone
6:59
like the iphone 12
7:00
in order to use 5g access on a carrier
7:04
that supports it
7:05
some final thoughts now and overall i'm
7:07
impressed with the results from mint
7:09
mobile on the 5g network
7:11
from my experience i've been testing
7:13
low-cost cell phone service providers
7:14
for a few years more than a dozen of
7:16
them
7:17
mint mobile has always been near the top
7:19
i'd say the top
7:20
five and nothing has changed with my
7:22
most recent test it is one of my
7:24
favorites
7:25
you can learn about some of my other
7:27
favorites for cheap cell phone plans
7:28
i'll link to a resource on my website
7:31
in the description below and if you've
7:33
put mint mobile's 5g network to the test
7:35
run some speed tests and let me know the
7:37
results in the comments below i'm
7:39
curious to see
7:40
what speeds people are getting in
7:41
different parts of the country
7:43
remember the download speed to be 309
7:46
megabits per second
7:47
from outside the t-mobile store so if
7:50
you found this video helpful please
7:52
like it and consider subscribing to my
